Determining the correct size instrument is always best done in person. Whenever possible, meet with your teacher or private instructor to get their recommendation. We can size you here at our Shop by appointment.
If you cannot size in person, here are some helpful guides:
String instruments are always held with the left hand and bow with the right hand, no matter which is the player’s dominant side.
Violin and Viola sizes are determined by arm length.
Step 1: Have your student stand up straight. Extend the left arm straight out to the side at shoulder height.
Step 2: Place a measuring tape or yardstick against the side of the neck and measure to the middle of the palm. (See diagram)
Step 3: Use the chart below to find the appropriate size instrument for your student.
Tip: If your student is on the borderline between two sizes, always size down so they are not overextending themselves.
Cello size depends on the player’s height and arm length. Finger span can also be important. These measurements are usually in proportion to one another.
Step 1: Have the student stand up straight and measure their height.
Step 2: Remain standing and have the student extend their left arm straight out to the side at shoulder height. Place a measuring tape or yardstick against the neck and measure to the middle of the palm. (See diagram)
Step 3: With the fingers of the left hand outstretched, measure from the tip of the index finger to the tip of the pinky finger. (See diagram)
Step 4: Use the chart below to find the appropriate size instrument for your student.
Tip: If your student is on the borderline between two sizes, always size down so they are not overextending themselves.
Bass sizing is based on the student’s height. Finger size is also important.
Step 1: Have the student stand up straight and measure their height.
Step 2: With the fingers of the left hand outstretched, measure from the tip of the index finger to the tip of the pinky finger. (See diagram)
Step 3: Use the chart below to find the appropriate size instrument for your student.
