Favourite carols and festive tunes have here been creatively arranged for the beginner quartet (Grade 1-2+) by the ever-resourceful Mary Cohen. From the more solemn to the extremely boisterous, these arrangements explore a wide range of musical styles as well as many interesting string effects (including simple harmonics, col legno, pizzicato and tremolo). Conscious of the limited rehearsal time available in the mad rush up to the annual carol service or Christmas concert, Mary has also provided invaluable technique tips to help deal with problems which might otherwise disrupt the musical flow. Famed as both violinist and composer (many suites, sonatas, and concerti survive, along with his sole opera, Scylla et Glaucus), he drew successfully upon all of Europe's national styles.

Beautiful Adagios: 9 Pieces for Two Violins includes melodies and arias arranged for two violins. The collection has a passion for detail with convincing musical results. These arrangements are notable for their high fidelity to the original works. Both parts are of equal importance and the melody moves frequently from one player to the other. The six sonatas by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) are among the best-known baroque compositions for violoncello and basso continuo, second only to those by Antonio Vivaldi. Marcello was a famous composer during his lifetime, and consequently his collection could be found in printed editions in the major European music metropolises of London, Paris and Amsterdam. Even if there is some uncomfortable fingering in these sonatas - which might be due to Marcello's working with a five-string cello with an added E' string - they are of only moderate difficulty and belong to the standard works of the violoncello teaching literature.
